It&#8217;s a low-carb diet created by Robert Atkins.  He had gained a great deal of weight while he attended medical school.  A medical Journal had an article about a diet.  He built on that diet and eventually made it popular.</p>
<p>Dr. Atkins came up with new ideas, his Atkins diet, about the nature of weight gain.  He held that saturated fats weren&#8217;t as bad as people claim.   Carbohydrates, found in potatoes, and breads, were the real problem.  Atkins held that our obsession with fat actually worsened the problem.  Carbohydrates are used to make up for the lack of fat in low fat foods.  That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were worse than they normally ate.</p>
<p>This all changes in the Atkins diet.  By cutting out carbohydrates people would burn stored body fats.  Lose the fat lose the weight, that&#8217;s dieting for idiots.  The goal wasn&#8217;t necessarily to take in fewer calories.  Now it was all about what your diet can help you burn.  In fact Atkins cited a study that claimed the body would burn an extra 950 calories on his diet.  That sounded good but it wasn&#8217;t true.</p>
<p>The Atkins diet also could help people with type 2 diabetes..  Type 2 diabetes is most often associated with obesity.  Therefore, by means of losing weight a person on the Atkins diet would be addressing their type 2 diabetes.  In addition the Atkins diet also addresses the measure of taking in fewer carbohydrates which is part of managing type 2 diabetes, so that Dr. Atkins suggested people on his diet would no longer need to monitor their blood sugar or take insulin.  The medical world, in general, disagrees with Atkins on this point.  They agree lower carbohydrates help with type 2 diabetes, but there is no proof that carbohydrates cause the disease.</p>
<p>So just how does this Atkins diet work?  It follows four phases &#8211; induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance.  Here is an overview of the most important phase &#8211; Induction.</p>
<p>The Induction phase is the most difficult phase of the Atkins diet.  It lasts for about two weeks.  Carbohydrates are nearly removed entirely from the diet, only 15-20 grams can be consumed each day.  The result of this phase should be ketosis, a metabolic reaction by which the body converts stored fat into fatty acids, generally prompted by a lack of glucose.  Weight loss during this phase can be extreme &#8211; some Atkins followers reported losses of 5-10 pounds a week.</p>
<p>The next three phases of the Atkins diet help establish the levels of carbs people can consume in order to lose weight and to maintain a desired weight.  Dr. Atkins himself died of complications of increased fat intake in his diet, which is something to keep in mind when choosing this diet.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a challenge to find clear cut information, such as a web site, for the Atkins grapefruit diet.  One common element of cons is that clear information is generally hard to find.  This possible con does it&#8217;s best to make people assume it has something to do with the official Atkins diet.</p>
<p>Does the Atkins grapefruit diet have anything to do with the actual Atkins diet?  Nope &#8211; the Atkins company doesn&#8217;t mention the diet on its web site, and the most critical phase of the famous diet called the Induction phase does not allow any fruit.</p>
<p>Here is what can be eaten in the induction phase &#8211; sorry Atkins grapefruit diet, no fruit here:</p>
<p>Fish of all kinds<br />
Chicken, turkey and other fowl<br />
All sorts of shellfish<br />
Beef, pork and other meats<br />
Any style egg<br />
Cheese<br />
Vegetables<br />
A variety of herbs and spices<br />
Fats and Oils<br />
Water and other low carb drinks including diet soda</p>
<p>Unfortunately for the Atkins grapefruit diet, there no fruit.  Grapefruit and other fruits such as fruit juices are specified in other phases of the Atkins diet for fat loss.  But there is far more grapefruit in the Atkins Grapefruit diet than Dr. Atkins would ever dream of allowing.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot of grapefruit in the Atkins grapefruit diet &#8211; up to 18 carbs.  Even the phases of Atkins that allow grapefruit limit intake to below 8 grams of carbs of grapefruit per day. That&#8217;s a severe disagreement.</p>
<p>When they hear about the Atkins grapefruit diet people should naturally visit the Atkins web site to read more about it.  It starts to sound fishy when there&#8217;s no mention there.</p>
<p>In general remember this.  Any diet that relies too heavily on one food, such as grapefruit on a grapefruit diet, is unhealthy in any but extremely short periods.  The Atkins diet frowns on eating the way the Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends.</p>

<p>Fad diets are short term diets in which people are to lose a lot of weight, and are popular because of their claims of great weight loss. Fad diets generally include some super food, like the cookie in the cookie diet, with miraculous weight loss properties. They are usually sold by a series of wild claims, much like the old pitch men pitched in the traveling medicine shows.</p>
<p>The cookie diet was created by a physician named Sanford Siegel in 1975 while he was researching a book on the effect of natural foods on hunger. The cookie diet consists of eating 6 cookies in place of breakfast and lunch, then consuming a normal dinner. People on the diet ate only 800 calories a day. People went wild over the cookie diet to the extent that 14 clinics opened in Florida. In the middle 1980s over 200 doctors were prescribing Dr. Siegel&#8217;s cookie diet in their own practices. The diet was quickly expanded to miracle soups and shakes that also contained the amino acids.</p>
<p>There is another version of the cookie diet referred to as the Hollywood cookie diet because it became popular with many Hollywood stars. Stars and starlets made their use of the diet well known, which helped vault it to public attention.  This newer version of the diet included four cookies and a dinner.  These cookies each contain 150 calories and fiber, protein and minerals.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re thinking of the cookie diet take Donnie Brasco&#8217;s advice &#8211; forget about it. Eat less, exercise more &#8211; that&#8217;s the formula for good health.  Even if the star of your favorite movie claims to love them, avoid so called miracle weight loss foods.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- Start LikeButtonSetTop --><!-- End LikeButtonSetTop --><p>A diet that is written only to be followed for a short time is called categorized as one of the fad diets.  Another popular culture meaning for the term is a diet that becomes wildly popular for a period of a few months to a few years, and then fades into obscurity.  Examples include the grapefruit diet, the South Beach diet, and Jenny Craig.</p>
<p>Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. Any time one particular food suddenly becomes a superstar, that&#8217;s a food fad. Common aspects of these fads include:</p>
<p>- The food is attributed with miraculous powers.<br />
- Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do bad things.</p>
<p>One of these fad diets that has these elements is the Atkins diet. Carbohydrates are avoided like the plague, because a carbohydrate low diet can do amazing things for your body. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because then the body enters a super fat burning condition.  This diet had a number of short periods of extreme carbohydrate avoidance, followed by long periods of sustainable low carbohydrate eating. However, many people are able to continue the Atkins diet for years.</p>
<p>The Atkins diet was also one of these fad diets in that huge popularity was fairly short-lived. For a number of years anyone who thought of dieting thought about the Atkins diet .  People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all on the Atkins diet. When Dr. Atkins died to superstardom of his diet died with him.</p>
<p>Many fad diets can be quite dangerous.  The Subway diet made popular in television commercials wasn&#8217;t exempt. It revolves around the extreme weight loss case of Jared who ate Subway sandwiches and baked chips to lose over 250 pounds in the span of a single year. In reality Jared cut his caloric intake from over 10,000 calories a day to only 900.  Such an extreme level of caloric intake cuts and rapid weight loss is unhealthy. Even so, the Subway diet when followed in moderation can work.  Particularly because the diet included exercise &#8212; Jared walked 6 miles a day while losing the weight.</p>
<p>Beware of fad diets. A long-term eating strategy combined with moderate exercise is usually the better bet.</p>

<p>We won&#8217;t know whether this slim fast diet works until we understand the basic principles behind it. The core of the diet is drinking Slim fast shakes in the place of two of your daily meals. The dieter can eat a sensible dinner, and can also eat two pieces of fruit and the Slim fast nutrition bar as snacks.  This diet cuts about 1000 calories from the average male&#8217;s diet, and 500 from the average female&#8217;s diet &#8211; averaging about 1200 calories daily.  Add exercise and you&#8217;re sure to lose weight on this diet.</p>
<p>This Slim fast diet is easy to use, that&#8217;s important. If diet is too hard to maintain it will never work. another healthy aspect of the Slim fast diet is drinking a lot of water &#8211; 6 to 8 cups everyday.</p>
<p>The Slim fast diet is lacking in some of the vitamins, minerals and other necessary nutrients of a healthy diet. Most of these are found in the average foods that people eat, but not all are found in the Slim fast shake or nutrition bars.  Another danger on this diet is to cut out the dinner meal. They want to lose weight even faster. But this is a great danger, because cutting calories to that extent is not healthy. In addition, as already stated, the shakes alone do not provide many of the elements needed in a healthy diet.</p>
<p>Some people have found success with a modified Slim fast diet.  This is something like eating two normal meals a day and replacing only one with the Slim fast shake. It&#8217;s a good, safe way to lose weight.</p>
<p>Like any diet, the Slim fast diet can work, but it must be followed with caution. Use common sense.</p>

<p>Ian Smith, the fat smash diet author, has quite a resume. In addition to sitting on the board for the American Council on Exercise, he is a health consultant for well known television shows and a columnist for many health magazines. Celebrity Fit Club, the show he created and for which he served as head judge, was based on the fat smash diet.</p>
<p>The fat smash diet is designed to create healthy habits through implementing four distinct phases:</p>
<p>One &#8211; detox: People can lose as much as 10 pounds in nine days by removing negative food and spiritual influences from their lives. Amongst other weird habits to get into during this phase, Smith suggests walking around in a bathing suit and weighing yourself in front of a mirror.</p>

<p>The diabetic diet can help people who suffer from both major types of diabetes. Type I, called juvenile diabetes, is often diagnosed in children while type II usually starts in adulthood and is more common.  Type I diabetics suffer because their bodies don&#8217;t produce insulin, while Type II diabetics suffer because their cells don&#8217;t absorb insulin.  A diabetic diet addresses both types, but type II can actually be avoided or reversed with the proper diet.</p>
<p>In general the diabetic diet is geared towards attaining ideal body weight for controlling and managing diabetes. There is a simple rule of thumb to establish this ideal body weight. For a woman begin with 100 pounds at 5 feet tall, at 5 pounds for every inch over 5 feet, while if under 5 feet subtract 5 pounds for each inch under 5 feet.  Here&#8217;s a quick example &#8211; a woman who is 5&#8217;4” tall ideally should be 100+20 pounds, in other words 120 pounds.  Males begin with 106 pounds at five feet and add 6 pounds for every inch over five feet. At 5&#8217;6” a man&#8217;s ideal weight is 142 pounds.</p>
<p>The ideal formula for a diabetic diet varies, but there are some common basics. For a person with type I diabetes diet should be approximately 35 calories per kilogram of body weight per day, that&#8217;s 16 calories per pound of body weight per day.  That means a 160 pound man should eat about 2500 calories per day. Type II diabetics eat about 1500 calories per day to lose weight, then differing amounts of calories to maintain ideal weight.</p>
<p>Carbohydrates account for about 50% of the calories consumed in a diabetic diet. It is often believed that even lower card-levels are healthier for Diabetic patients, but higher percentages of  fat  in the diet has its own problems.  But if saturated fats are avoided, a little more fat in the diet is OK.</p>

<p>What’s the one New Year’s Resolution that is most likely to be broken? Again, it’s the resolution to <a href="http://quickweightlossplan.net/">lose weight</a>.</p>
<p>There are dozens of diets available to help you reach your weight loss goal. There are low carb diets, low fat diets, high fiber diets, and liquid meal replacement diets. There are diets in which food is mailed to you each week and diets where you go to meetings each week for tips and encouragement. There are diets in which you combine certain foods each day and diets in which you eat only one type of food per day. No matter what our individual preferences are, there is a diet available that will work with them. The choice is all yours.</p>
<p>But what can we do to stop submarining our sincere desire to shed pounds? Before we ever start we must examine our methods and motives. Why do we want to lose weight? Sometimes we want to <a href="http://quickweightlossplan.net/fatloss4idiots" target="_self">lose weight</a> in order to feel better, and sometimes we want to look better. These are both sound reasons, although health certainly takes a priority over looks. Know your motivation. Understand yourself.</p>
<p>How much weight do you need to lose to reach your goal? Ten pounds? Twenty? Fifty or more? Figure out before you ever start what your ultimate goal is. If you have a lot to lose, create smaller goals so that you will feel successful and be motivated to keep up the good work along the way. Lose your first fifteen or twenty pounds and then allow for maintenance for a couple weeks. You won’t be going off your diet, simply practicing the hardest part of any diet.</p>
<p>After you have maintained your loss, go back on your diet until you lose another specific block of weight and then do the same thing again. You will need a realistic idea of what it will take to maintain your weight loss. Practicing this technique will prepare you for the end of the diet. You won’t be catapulted into the non-diet world with a shock, unable to handle the new choices you will suddenly have.</p>
<p>Before you ever start on your weight loss journey, choose the activities you will incorporate into your life to take the place of boredom eating. This is your chance to fulfill other resolutions by learning to dance or paint or skate.</p>
<p>When you do begin your diet, make sure it is one that is approved by your doctor. Each one of us has unique physical and nutritional needs. Embarking on a diet that will undermine a condition or existing illness won’t result in reaching our goal. Be informed and be prepared. Know why you are dieting and what your specific goals are. Don’t be a statistic again this year. Lose your weight successfully so that you never have to make a futile resolution again!</p>

You’re tired, dumpy and your favorite clothes don’t fit  any more. You may even feel a little disgusted when you look in the  mirror.</p>
<p>Rationally you know this weight didn’t come on over night. It took  months, perhaps years for you to put the fat on. And yet when you reach  your limit and decide you want to do something about it, you want it off  NOW. No, make that yesterday.</p>
<p>Now here’s the problem: the faster you lose the weight, the more  likely it is that you’ll be just losing “weight” and not fat. That means  you’re losing water, muscle, and other tissue. Sure, some of the weight  you lose is fat – but not all of it. And that means that even though  the scale says you’re losing, you actually don’t look better. You may  even slightly shrink in size, but you’ll become even more “lumpy”  looking because the weight you’re losing is muscle and not fat.</p>
<p>When this happens, you become “skinny fat.” Sure, you’re smaller. But  you wouldn’t be caught dead in a tank top much less a bathing suit.  When you wave, your arms get left jiggling. You have enough fat hanging  on you that your belly looks like a bed sheet flapping in the wind.</p>
<p><strong>In other words, it’s not pretty.</strong></p>
<p>Besides being unattractive, losing all your muscle is also  contradictory to your weight loss goals. You see, it takes far more  calories per day just to maintain a pound of muscle versus a pound of  fat. Indeed, you can consider muscle “active” tissue in that it needs  calories to sustain itself.</p>
<p>That means that the more muscle you have, the more calories you’re  burning all day long. And of course the flip side of that is that the  less muscle you have, the fewer calories you’re burning …and hence the  less you can eat before you start gaining weight.</p>
<p>One problem with crash diets and fad diets is that people lose weight  so quickly that they’re losing muscle.  Suddenly their metabolism drops  like a ton of bricks because they no longer have that muscle to  sustain.  Losing muscle means your metabolism goes from a roaring  furnace to a flickering candle.</p>
<p>Indeed, many experts suggest that one reason that people’s metabolism  tends to drop as they get older is because they are losing their  muscle. Suddenly they can’t eat like they did when they were younger,  because now they gain weight when they do so.</p>
<p>By now you’re probably getting a pretty good idea of why you should  seek to lose fat while still maintaining your calorie-burning, shapely  muscle!</p>
